I went to my favorite salvage yard yesterday to get a porcelain sink (don't ask) and I talked DH into giving me a few minutes to browse. OMG!!! I found a 1940's art deco bedroom suite in immaculate condition. Full size bed frame, headboard and footboard. Vanity/dressing table with huge round mirror. Big dresser with huge mirror. Bench for vanity. I nearly fell over. Well I know it's worth a few thousand, and I am pretty broke. He wants $750 and I got him down to $475. If I can get him down to 350 or 400, I'll get it. I absolutely can't afford this. But I see it as an investment that I can pass down to my granddaughter. Feedback, please. Am I crazy or what?
WOW!! That bedroom suite sounds beautiful! Would the guy let you do a layaway? Hmmm. . . I'm trying to think of quick ways to get the cash - yard sales, bake sales, craft shows, standing on the side of the road with a cardboard sign . . . you know they pay you for donating plasma - just kidding - sorta . . . ;D

Well, I have to drop my car off tonight to be fixed. $500, ouch. But, a friend owed me $400 which he paid me last Saturday. And my insurance guy re-wrote us and I got a #325 refund. I forgot about all that when I saw the stuff. I think I can swing it.

The first cool thing, it's not hubby's money. So he has no say in it. Anything I can afford, I can have. I learned a long time ago not to spend OUR money for things that aren't necessities. Long story.
And YES!! I called the guy today. I'm picking it up Saturday. And my car repair was $140 less than it was expected to be. So I guess I'm in high cotton! ;D

Not near as exciting as you guys think. A bottle of perfume fell off my little T2T corner shelf (all by itself, weird) and hit the sink. I thought it was so strange thet the bottle didn't break. Later that evening, I was brushing my teeth and thought there was a long hair in the sink. I tried to move it with my finget to pick it up and it wouldn't move. Because it wasn't a hair. It was a crack in the sink. It went to a little hole (the crack meeting place apparently) and met up with 4 more cracks. So I had to get a "new" (not) sink. See? Boring. I'll make up a really good story later maybe and tell it!
And thanks! I am so excited about the furniture!! I can't wait to get everything all set up.

I think it's my dearly departed Mom. We thought she was stealing candy once, right after she died. The temp in the room suddenly dropped 10 or 15 degrees. DH yelled, "Mom, get out of that candy right now!" Temp went right back up.
Mom was a diabetic and I always say her death was an assisted suicide. Little Debbie assisted.
IS it here yet ?? do you have the furniture yet ?? How much longer ?? Can I drive ?? I'm hungry too. Doc,,,,Burndout is making faces at me. make her stooop Come on, give,,,,, we want pictures.!! Did you get it home ?
Stop it You're bugging me! Don't touch me. Stay on your own side! Kaydee touched me. She touched me! Make her stop. C'mon! Lemme look, Lemme look! I wanna see.. No!... I WANNA SEE You can't cuz I was here first. Move...Over...

Play nice, kids. I don't like spanking anyone cept my hunny bunny...OOPS, that just slipped out!
I got it!! I have been slaving to rearrange 3 rooms to make it work. I'm not quite finished and this working for a living CRAP is interfering. I will try to remember to take a pic or two when I get home. It still needs "oiling" (Old English, the furniture polish kind, not the 40 oz beer kind) and I still have to put the mirror on the dresser, put the bed together and buy a mattress/box springs.
Hi all! What a great site! Stumbled across it from an HGTV board link. Have gotten a lot of wonderful ideas... my brain's spinning now. Karen, I'm curious about the salvage yard. I'm a Richmonder too & don't really know of any. I've heard of a Caravattis (sp?), but was told that was mostly for architectural stuff salvaged out of the old Fan homes (i.e. highly priced). Mind sharing your favorite spot?

Hey Amy, I should've looked here first and I wouldn't have started that last thread.
My salvage spot is SB Cox. Go to where Williamsburg Rd meets Main St. You'll see Hatcher St. You can't miss it. From Wmsbg Rd take a left and go down the hill. As you pull in, the architectural stuff and other goodies are all the way to the left. Go thru the fence. The bricks, granite and huge stuff is straight ahead as you pull in. You can stop at the office and talk to Stu. Tell him his favorite girl, Karen, sent you. He'll roll his eyes, I'm sure.
Cox is way cheaper tham Caravatti's. It is also not as organized. I have found awesome stuff there, just look everywhere. What ever price Stu gives you, try to talk him down.
Oh Yay! Thanks Karen! I'll definitely check it out. I work up on Fulton Hill, but usually cut over to Dock St on the way home. I'll go Wmsbg to Main tonight to spot it so I can go one weekend soon (repainting kitchen this weekend). And I'll definitely tell Stu that you sent me! Thanks a bunch!
Ok so this is the first time I've looked at this post and I see it's a long one so I'm thinkin' cool! get a fresh cup of coffee sit back and read a nice story.........but noooo, someones ADHD infected brain forgot to finish her story! So wheres the pics? Did it all come and did you find a great arrangement for it? Did the gremlins spill any more perfume, did DM score some candy, has kaydee and burny2 killed eachother yet??? Where's the flippin pictures??!!!! I for one do not care for cliff hangers! UPDATE PLEASE Becky
I'm not finished and will do pics on the rest of the "new and improved" house when I'm done.
The girls haven't killed each other yet. I had to threaten to stop the car 3 times and actually stopped once. I haven't reached over the back seat to smack anyone yet. YET! Dearly departed Mom has not come back for candy. No more flying perfume bottles. Not much out of the ordinary. The car keys have legs, but we knew that years ago. Becky, honey, are you all right now?
