I have several milk bottles that I would like to make lamps out of. (One even has a cute little cow molded into it!) Anyway, I have the drill bits to drill a hole in the bottom of the bottles because I want the cord to come out from there. What I don't know is what pieces or parts do I need at the neck of the bottle so the rod isn't all wobbly there. Is there some kind of metal thiny that goes us there that the rod passes through.

They're called check rings, or bigger ones are vase caps. I buy mine from www.klockit.com
They bought out Lou Davis.
If the cord exits from the true bottom, and not the lower part of the side, you will need a base. Klockit doesn't have any, try Ebay or google search. You will need a rod to go all the way through, or if you just epoxy a check ring to the top, a threaded nipple. Also, nuts, rubber washers and grommets. Cord protectors are only for cords exiting directly through glass, not through pipe.
Thanks bunches! I knew you'd know what they were called. I found the bases somewhere and bookmarked it but I can't find it right now. Do you usually put the wholes in the true bottom of out of the side. IF I get one made and IF I get a digital camera for Christmas, I will show it to you. (I bookmarked the page about cameras too!)

I like to attach mine to a clear plate with GE silicon II and let the cord exit the side. It looks good, recycles more (plates from thrift store) and unifies the appearance. The side, near the bottom, is also esier to drill. If you've never drilled glass before, practice on stuff you don't mind breaking. Practice a few times. I put my bottles in water, covering the bottle completely, and drill with medium, even pressure. A drill press is easiest, then an electric drill. It took me years to figure out this method, but it has worked well for me.
